Montauk: The End of the World

I had never been to Montauk, at the farthest-out tip of Long Island, before.

But it always appealed to me, not for being a summer tourism destination, but for being a lonely, beautiful place for reflection. Two pop culture phenomena influenced me on this:

The film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind



and

"Memory Motel" by The Rolling Stones.


You know us, always charging windmills:




This restaurant was once a diner, featured in Eternal Sunshine. It's not open for business right now, but new owners are moving in. We hope they keep these windows!
